Chemical Safety Guidelines

Point 1: Proper Handling of Chemical Spills

It’s crucial for every company to have a well-defined procedure and thorough training for handling chemical spills. Ensure you have a detailed plan in place. Depending on the type and quantity of chemicals your company handles, you must be equipped with the appropriate spill kits and equipment. Always keep the latest Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for all chemicals on hand, particularly Section 6, which covers Accidental Release Measures.

Handling chemical spills can be hazardous! Prioritize your safety and the safety of others before addressing the spill. Assess the situation carefully. If there’s any danger or uncertainty, immediately call emergency services. If it’s safe to proceed, contain, collect, clean, and dispose of the chemical properly. Document the incident and file the report in your health and safety records. Discuss preventive measures with your team to avoid future incidents.

For example, an acid-based cleaner spill was not properly cleaned, disposed of, or communicated to the team, highlighting the need for strict adherence to safety protocols.

Point 2: Never Mix Chemicals

In the cleaning industry, we often use various chemicals, each with a specific purpose. Mixing chemicals might seem like it could enhance cleaning power, but it’s extremely dangerous and should never be done. Mixing chemicals can produce toxic gases or fumes and can be carcinogenic.

Always remember this critical rule when handling cleaning chemicals to ensure a safe working environment.
